Irish Wolfhound

This is one mammoth dog. As the world’s tallest breed, Irish Wolfhounds can look more like a small horse than a pup. Despite their size, Wolfhounds are an exceptionally gentle breed. Just be prepared for this dog to take up a lot of physical and emotional space in your life.

Size:
100-150 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
In addition to walks, this dog will need two 20-minute sessions of free run play each day. Due to their size, they need space to roam. Be careful not to exercise them just after eating or you could run the risk of gastric torsion (life-threatening distention of the stomach caused by gas).
Mess Factor:
Given this breed’s size and hair length (medium to long), you’re looking at spending some quality time with your vacuum cleaner and lint brush.
Barking and Volume:
Barking is not an issue with this breed.
Training Requirements:
One-on-one training works best with this intelligent and eager-to-please breed. A puppy class should be more than enough for this dog.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors:This breed is susceptible to gastric torsion, von Willebrand disease, bone cancer, heart problems and hip dysplasia. *A reputable breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is adequate.
Training: Basic training will do.
Other:Basic math. Big dog = big food bill.
Grooming Requirements:
This dog’s coat requires brushing two or three times a week. Expect to shell out for professional grooming twice a year. Cleaning their eyes and ears should be a high grooming priority.
Kid Compatibility:
Irish Wolfhounds are good with children but common sense needs to be taken, here. They’re large dogs and could accidentally knock down a child. Supervision is essential.
Longevity:
6-8 years.
Friendliness: Towards Animals
This friendly giant will benefit from interaction with other breeds. Irish Wolfhounds tend to get along with other animals.
Friendliness: Towards People
Irish Wolfhounds need constant affection. They love the self-esteem boost of winning over strangers and thrive on all kinds of companionship.
BE PREPARED FOR: This gentle giant is a sweet dog in a big package. Just be prepared for that big package to take up a lot of physical and emotional space in your life.
