Staffordshire Bull Terrier

One of the most interactive and even-tempered breeds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers thrive on attention and affection. If you have some to spare, this could be the breed for you.

Size:
25-38 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
This breed is happiest when walked daily (for 30 minutes to an hour) and when provided with some opportunity to run off leash. If you’re a jogger, you’ve got a ready-made companion.
Mess Factor:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier sheds…but not excessively. You won’t need a lint brush every time you walk out the door.
Barking and Volume:
These dogs will bark when they feel like their family is being threatened. Outside of that, they’re not overly woofy. They do snore, however.
Training Requirements:
This is an intelligent breed that lives hard and plays hard, so training will help keep their wilder tendencies in check. It is important to teach them how to remain calm when they’re in situations where they could get overly excited (around too many people, for example); they can respond by getting hyperactive and snappy or occasionally doing things that could cause them to injure themselves. Basic training is a must and further training may be necessary.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: This breed is prone to eye problems, hip dysplasia and tumors. *A reputable breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is adequate.
Training: A puppy class is a minimum.
Grooming Requirements:
This breed will benefit from weekly brushing with a grooming mitt. The Staffe is very low maintenance.
Kid Compatibility:
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are among the most welcoming breeds with children. Socialize them both early and they’ll end up being the best of friends.
Longevity:
15 years.
Friendliness: Towards Animals
Staffordshire Bull Terriers prefer human company and can be snappy around other animals–especially other dogs. They can be territorial. Supervision is required.
Friendliness: Towards People
Socialize Staffes at a young age and they’ll warm up to strangers. They love to be in the company of their families and need to give and receive affection in order to be happy.
BE PREPARED FOR: A loyal, energetic and exceptionally loving dog…with a touch of hyperactivity.
