Australian Cattle Dog

Could you survive in the Australian Outback? If not, then you probably won’t be able to keep up with these rugged superdogs. They excel at what they were bred to do, which is work tirelessly in harsh conditions. They want nothing more than a job to do and a few words of praise from their parents. It would be unfair to coop this dog up in a city or suburb.

Size:
35-45 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
Australian Cattle Dogs are exceptionally tough and athletic–casual walks on the leash will not cut it for this breed. They are happiest when they have a job to do. If they become bored and restless, they are likely to cause trouble. A long jog–every day–plus physically intense obedience work might begin to satisfy this dog’s exercise requirements, provided they are not cooped up the rest of the time. This is not a dog that will be happy living in an apartment.
Mess Factor:
This breed should be spending most of its time outdoors, so shedding shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Barking and Volume:
These dogs are not particularly loud, but they will bark if the occasion arises.
Training Requirements:
Australian Cattle Dogs are very intelligent and driven but require firm handling. It is not that they are particularly difficult to train, but they require rigorous mental stimulation and will be happiest when challenged by sophisticated commands. Classes are recommended.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: The breed is susceptible to eye, hip and hearing problems. *A reputable breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is sufficient.
Training: It would be a shame NOT to train these dogs to a high level of obedience.
Grooming Requirements:
A weekly brushing is all that’s required to remove loose hairs and keep the coat healthy.
This is not a dog that needs to be primped.
Kid Compatibility:
Australian Cattle Dogs tend to be too serious to enjoy the company of children. They may attempt to “herd” children and nip at their heels. Early socialization and consistent correction can help control these urges.
Longevity:
10-13 years.
Friendliness: Towards Animals
This breed may be aggressive with unknown dogs and should not be trusted with smaller house pets.
Friendliness: Towards People
Australian Cattle Dogs are naturally suspicious of strangers and it is important to carefully socialize them. They are happiest as one-person dogs and have little time for outsiders.
BE PREPARED FOR: This breed will be an incredible partner for an experienced handler who can put him to work, but is probably too much dog for most wannabe dog parents.
