Yorkshire Terrier

There’s a reason the Yorkshire Terrier is in the top five most popular breeds according to the American Kennel Club. This non-shedding little dog with the big personality makes a wonderful companion and will become a loyal and affectionate member of your family.
Size:
Up to 7 lbs.

Exercise Requirements:
Yorkies can get much of the exercise they need running around inside the house. Short walks on a leash (totalling 30-45 minutes) are perfect for this pup.

Mess Factor:
Yorkies’ long, silky coats don’t shed–great for neatfreaks.

Barking and Volume:
These dogs like the sound of their own woof. Prepare for some barking, unless you’re willing to put in some training time.

Training Requirements:
A puppy class can be helpful to teach basic commands and prevent barking from becoming an issue.

Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: Patellar luxation (slipping kneecaps), liver shunt (abnormal blood flow in the liver; toxins can not clear), retinal dysplasis (abnormal development of the retina), tracheal collapse, hypoglycemia. * A responsible breeder can minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Professional grooming is needed about six times a year.
Training: Basic training only.

Grooming Requirements:
Yorkies’ long coats need to be brushed daily (or every other day) to prevent matting. Monthly baths are in order and expect to pay a visit to a professional groomer six times a year.

Kid Compatibility:
Small children can accidentally injure a Yorkie quite easily. This breed is recommended for families with older children.

Longevity:
15 years.

Friendliness Towards Animals:
Yorkshire Terriers can be aggressive towards strange dogs and animals. They’re brave beyond their size and growling and barking is not uncommon.

Friendliness Towards People:
These dogs are protective and loyal to their family. They’re reserved with strangers but love their parents and need plenty of affection and interaction.

BE PREPARED FOR:

A big personality in a small package and a wonderful companion dog.
