Welsh Corgi-Pembroke

Famously owned by Queen Elizabeth II, these small pooches have a long body, big ears and a sweet sensibility. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are playful, quick-witted dogs and they should be given plenty of opportunities to expend their mental and physical energy.

Size:
Male: 25-30 lbs. Female: 24-28 lbs.

Exercise Requirements:
Pembroke Welsh Corgis will need a moderate amount of exercise to expend their energy — one good, long walk each day should do the trick.

Mess Factor:
Most of the year, brushing your Pembroke a couple of times a week will take care of the loose hair, but since these dogs are double-coated, get ready for daily brushing during their heavier shedding period (twice a year).

Barking and Volume:
Some Pembrokes will bark a lot when they become excited or protective, but this can be minimized with proper training.

Training Requirements:
This breed responds quickly to obedience training, but they can have a mind of their own, so enforce rules with confidence. Food can help motivate them during training. A basic puppy class should do the trick.

Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: The breed is susceptible to hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and epilepsy. *A responsible breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is adequate.
Training: Enroll your dog in obedience training and socialization classes.

Grooming Requirements:
In general, bi-weekly brushing and the occasional bath will do. Twice a year when the dogs go through their “super shed” period, however, daily brushing will keep the mess to minimum. Have their nails trimmed (or do it yourself) once or twice a month.

Kid Compatibility:
Pembrokes are friendly with children, but their herding instincts mean they have a tendency to nip at people’s heels. This behavior can be minimized or avoided through early training.

Longevity:
12-15 years.

Friendliness: Towards Animals
Pembrokes are friendly dogs that will tend to get along with (or try to herd) other pets and animals. Early socialization can help to ensure that they’re comfortable around all kinds of animals.

Friendliness: Towards People
These loyal dogs are loving and affectionate towards their own families, but may be a bit reserved at first around strangers.

BE PREPARED FOR:
A sweet, intelligent companion with a mind of his own.
