Shar Pei

With his wrinkly skin and purple tongue, there’s no denying that the Chinese Shar-Pei is a unique and adorable breed. But while they look cute and cuddly, the Shar-Pei is certainly not for everyone. With a fierce sense of loyalty and a natural instinct to protect their family, the Shar-Pei is not looking to be just anyone’s best friend — but he can be yours, if you give him the love and attention that he needs.

Size:
Male: 55-65 lbs. Female: 40-55 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
Though the Shar-Pei doesn’t have a huge amount of energy, they definitely enjoy good dose of fresh air every day. A daily walk will fill his exercise requirements and keep him in good health. Regular mental and physical stimulation is a must, so mix things up with games and play time, in addition to your daily stroll.
Mess Factor:
With such a short coat, the Shar-Pei is not a big shedder. A weekly brush down will help to keep stray hair off your couch.
Barking and Volume:
Shar-Pei prefer to be the strong, silent type.
Training Requirements:
Shar-Pei are independent, assertive and strong-willed. Puppy classes are a must. This breed has to learn early on that you’re in charge, or they will walk all over you.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Problems: Shar-Pei Fever, skin problem, eye diseases, hypothyroidism, respiratory issues, bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia. *A reputable breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming Requirements: Regular home grooming, including ear cleaning and nail clipping is acceptable.
Training Requirements: Help from a professional trainer will be required for this stubborn pup.
Grooming Requirements:
Although their ultra-coarse coat requires little grooming, Shar-Pei have small ears that need to be cleaned daily and special attention must be paid to the folds of their skin to head off any potential problems.
Kid Compatibility:
While kids may find the wrinkly Shar-Pei irresistibly cute, unfortunately, the feeling is not mutual. Shar-Pei have a low tolerance for kids and must be socialized with children from a young age for the two to be compatible. Careful supervision is a must.
Longevity:
8-10 years.
Friendliness: Towards Animals
The Shar-Pei has a history as a fighting dog, which means that he can be aggressive when it comes to other canines. When it comes to other household pets, however, Shar-Pei are much friendlier. Good news for the cat.
Friendliness: Towards People
As a natural guard dog and protector, Shar-Pei are wary of strangers and won’t let anyone mess with their beloved family. Once a stranger has earned their trust, the Shar-Pei will be more welcoming. Early socialization with people is a must.
BE PREPARED FOR: Significant training time, but plenty of fun with this ultra-loyal family guard dog.
