Bernese Mountain Dog

If you’re taking your Bernese Mountain Dog out for a stroll, you’d better count on it being a long one–wherever you go interested passersby are sure to stop you to ask about your distinctive dog. You’ll likely tell them that members of this breed are usually gentle giants with lovely personalities who demand plenty of time and space.

Size:
Male: 90-120 lbs.
Female: 70-100 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
Bernese Mountain Dogs need daily, gentle walks to keep them healthy. They love to pull objects and walking while pulling a wagon is an ideal way for them to stay strong and healthy without putting undue stress on their bodies.
Mess Factor:
Hair and drool is in your future — and in your furniture — with this breed.
Barking and Volume:
This strong, silent type will only bark with good reason.
Training Requirements:
Bernese Mountain Dogs are easygoing, calm and adapt well to family life. Due to their impressive size, it’s important that they are obedient and well socialized, but a basic puppy class should be all that’s required to show them the ropes.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: Bernese Mountain Dogs are susceptible to eye, elbow and hip problems and need to be monitored carefully for heatstroke in warm climates. *A responsible breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is adequate.
Training: A basic puppy class will help maintain a happy home.
Grooming Requirements:
The Bernese’s glossy coat needs to be brushed once or twice a week. During periods of heavy shedding (twice a year), daily brushing is recommended. Your Bernese may need to be shaved in the summertime in order to stay cool.
Kid Compatibility:
Bernese Mountain Dogs take their role in the family seriously and are notoriously gentle with children.
Longevity:
8-10 years.
Friendliness Towards Animals:
Bernese Mountain Dogs are generally very good with dogs and other animals, but their large size makes early socialization important. You don’t want them to take advantage.
Friendliness Towards People:
While rarely aggressive, Bernese Mountain Dogs tend to be ambivalent toward strangers, preferring the affection of their family. They will warm up over time.
BE PREPARED FOR:
A faithful companion with a calm and gentle temperament whose susceptibility to various ailments means they may not be around for nearly as long as you’d like.
