Alaskan Malamute

Because of their tremendous need for vigorous exercise, this stunning, wolf-like breed is best suited for people who live an active lifestyle. Couch potatoes need not apply.

Size:
Males: 85 lbs. Females: 75 lbs.
Exercise Requirements:
As an athletic breed, a LOT of daily exercise is necessary for a Malamute. Expect to spend hours every day walking, hiking or running with this breed. Dog parks are wonderful, too. Malamutes are accustomed to the great outdoors and thrive in cold climates. Lack of vigorous exercise can lead to destructive chewing and wolf-like howling.
Mess Factor:
Twice a year Malamute’s shed their undercoats completely. The process can take three weeks and the hair will come out in clumps. You’ll be one with your vacuum during these periods. At other times, shedding is less of a problem but you’ll still need to keep your lint brush handy.
Barking and Volume:
The breed has a deep howl that can echo a long distance. Unless you live in the boonies, it’s not a good idea to leave a bored Malamute out in the backyard as their mournful howl can stir up the neighborhood.
Training Requirements:
Early socialization is important with all large breeds, simply because their substantial size can pose a potential threat to those around them. Malamutes are intelligent and learn quickly but it takes work and training. For some, Malamutes can be “too much dog for a dog.” They can be rough in play, which can deter an owner from firm training. Start them early while they’re still small. Further obedience training may be necessary.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: Malamutes are susceptible to hip dysplasia, cataracts and overheating. *A reputable breeder can minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: Home grooming is generally adequate with the occasional trip to a professional groomer thrown in for good measure.
Training: A puppy class is recommended. Further obedience training may be required.
Grooming Requirements:
Weekly brushing is recommended. (It’s a good time to check your dog for rashes, bites and cuts). Frequent bathing can dry out the dogs natural oils so you only need to bathe your Malamute when he is excessively filthy.
Kid Compatibility:
If you are bringing this breed into a family with children, you need to be mindful at all times. Malamutes are rugged, strong dogs that can accidentally harm a child. With that said, well-socialized Malamutes were used by the Inuit to do everything from hunting to babysitting their children. Early socialization with children is key.
Longevity:
11 years.
Friendliness: Towards Animals
This breed can be aggressive with dogs of the same sex and predatory with smaller pets and animals.
Friendliness: Towards People
As long as Malamutes stay stimulated with exercise, they are affectionate to people and love to be members of the pack. They’ll need your attention and give you theirs.
BE PREPARED FOR: A stunning dog that will have people commenting…while you are out on one of your many, many, many exercise excursions with your Malamute.
